STATEMENT FROM SVEA FRASER, M.DIV., RESPONDING TO
AD HOMINEM ATTACKS AGAINST
58 FAITHFUL PRIESTS OF THE BOSTON ARCHDIOCESE
Without denying the irreparable harm that has been
done to the victim/survivors of sexual abuse, the next group of
people profoundly hurt by this crisis is our priests, who hear
the cries of victims of abuse and of the people who hunger for
authentic leadership, while at the same time being expected to
be obedient to the bishop to whom they are committed to represent.
We wish to acknowledge the terrible situation for all priests
today, and we stand in solidarity with them as they struggle to
witness to the truth, even when it is contrary to what they might
be told to do.
We are particularly outraged at unfair and ungrounded
statements made in recent newspaper publications against the 58
brave priests of the Boston Archdiocese who followed their consciences
in signing a letter calling for Cardinal Law's resignation. We
stand in solidarity with all -- priests, survivors, and laypersons
-- who strive to be authentic witnesses of Jesus Christ. Together
let us all commit ourselves to act justly, to love kindly, and
to walk humbly with our God.
