TO: Editor, New York Times
FROM: Mary Pat Fox, President, Voice of the Faithful
Dear Editor:
“A Choice for New York Priests in Abuse Cases” raises an
issue the Church has failed to address for decades and so now the States
must do so.
Victims of child sexual abuse often take 25 to 30 years to come forward.
These factors combined with the protection of abusive priests by our
church leaders have resulted in this predicament of credibly accused
child abusers walking the streets.
To ensure justice for all, the criminal and civil statutes of limitations
laws for child sex abuse, throughout the country, need to be extended
to at least 30 years. Then the general public, not just the bishops,
will have the opportunity to monitor convicted priests using the sex
offender registry just like they can do with any other child molester.
Regards,
Mary Pat Fox
