Statement from Jim Post, President,
Voice of the Faithful Regarding
the Suffolk County Grand Jury Report
The Suffolk County grand jury report makes clear that
members of the hierarchy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre embraced
a policy of concealing allegations of sexual abuse by priests. In
so doing, they failed to administer pastoral care to victims and
their families.
As these damaging files continue to emerge, a plausible
solution to the Catholic Church's flawed system of dealing with
sexual abusers remains evident: The laity must become actively involved
with the financial and personnel administration of their parishes
and dioceses. We also urge the bishop of every diocese to publicly
release all applicable documents associated with allegations of
sexual abuse by clergy and other personnel.
