Sept. 23, 2012  Being a Responsible Catholic Voter (Newburyport) -Reverend Kenneth R. Himes, O.F.M., Ph.D. Associate Professor, Boston College Department of Theology

Lecture: The following questions will be examined in the lecture and discussed during the evening:  Is there a moral obligation to vote?  Can a person cooperate in evil by voting?  Is it possible to vote for a candidate and still have moral reservations about some of the candidate’s views?  Is single-issue voting possible?  Are there resources within the moral tradition of Catholicism that can assist us in thinking through such issues?

Kenneth R. Himes, O.F.M. is a member of the Department of Theology at Boston College and a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America.  He is a Franciscan friar and Catholic priest.  Awarded the Ph.D. from Duke University in religion and public policy, Fr. Himes has a special interest in the area of Catholic social teaching and the role of the church in American public life.  He is the author of two books, editor of two more, and has written more than 75 essays in journals or as chapters in books.  His newest book Christianity and Politics will be published in 2013.

From North or South: Take Interstate 95 to Exit 57, onto Rte. 113 East – Storey Ave.  After passing two shopping plazas on the right, bear right as Storey Ave. turns into High St.  Proceed towards downtown Newburyport.  Court St. is on the left after you pass the Kelley School and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.  Parking lot is on the right after entering Court Street.
