VOTF in CT to Screen “Vows of Silence,” Film on Legionaries of Christ
(Continued)
“Vows of Silence” follows the career of Father Marcial Maciel, who won the favor of Pope John Paul II despite accusations of years of pedophilia. In the film by Jason Berry witnesses testify about Maciel’s sexual abuse, psychological tyranny, and the secret vows he imposed on the Legionaries. In 1998 a charge of sexual abuse against Maciel was filed with Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, then head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, who, as Benedict XVI, finally took action. The film tells a story of the greatest fundraiser of the modern church who enjoyed the protection of men in power.
The mission of Voice of the Faithful, an organization of mainstream Catholics, is to be “a prayerful voice, attentive to the Spirit, through which the faithful can actively participate in the governance and guidance of the Catholic Church.” VOTF believes that a reasoned dialogue among bishop, priests, nuns, and laymen and women will contribute to the renewal of the Church.
