Noted Theologian to Discuss Historical, Religious, and Doctrinal Uniqueness of Jesus at VOTF Meeting In New Jersey on September 10.

Noted Theologian to Discuss Historical, Religious, and Doctrinal Uniqueness of Jesus at VOTF Meeting In New Jersey on September 10.

All are invited to join us for a challenging and informative talk on The Uniqueness of Jesus by Roger Haight, S.J.

The phrase, "the uniqueness of Jesus" contains a variety of meanings, all contested, and raises some of the most challenging questions in Christian theology today. In discussing these questions from historical, religious and doctrinal perspectives, Fr. Haight will ask: How did Jesus represent God? Is Jesus the absolute and only way to salvation? Is Jesus exclusive savior? Inclusive savior? One savior among many? How did Jesus come to be called divine? Can the same logic be extended to other religious mediators?

These are open questions with no single agreed-upon answer. Fr. Haight will conclude by recognizing that they all fit under the umbrella of what Paul says holds all Christians together: "there is one body and one Spirit, ...one hope, ...one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all."

Fr. Haight is a recognized and sometimes controversial scholar and author, whose most recent works include Jesus Symbol of God, The Future of Christology (which will be available after his talk), and Christian Community in History. He grew up in Caldwell, NJ, and is a Jesuit of the New York Province. He has a doctorate in theology from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago and has taught throughout the United States and abroad. Currently a Scholar in Residence at Union Theological Seminary in New York, he is a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America, and was named Alumnus of the Year of the Divinity School of the University of Chicago for the year 2005.

The discussion will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 22, in the Chapel in Seminary Hall, at Drew University, 36 Madison Ave., Madison, NJ. For directions go to www.drew.edu and click on Maps and Directions. Enter the campus from Rt. 124 (Madison Ave.) at the traffic light onto Lancaster Rd. Drive straight to the main parking lot, passing the security hut. Seminary Hall is the first building on the left of the main lot. Take the walkway to the elevator and go to the second floor.

There is no charge for the program.
