Voice
of the Faithful Focus – A brief update
highlighting both a problem in our church and some
progress being made as we work together to Keep the
Faith, Change the Church.
Progress
The Delaware State Senate unanimously passed the Child
Victim's Act, to eliminate the civil statute of limitations
in child sexual-abuse cases and allow time for past victims
to file claims. This success can be attributed to great
teamwork among survivors, parents, legislators, members
of numerous child advocacy groups and the Voice of the
Faithful affiliates in Delaware and the surrounding areas.
In addition the Diocese of Wilmington's newspaper, the
Dialog, published two letters refuting their editorial
position in opposition to the look-back provision in
the bill.
This win must provide the momentum needed to get the bill passed through the
Delaware House. The job is not done yet! We encourage everyone to pray for
the success of the coalition that is supporting this bill in the Delaware House
of Representatives.

Problem The
bankruptcy judge in charge of the San Diego bankruptcy
trial has called off a threatened
contempt charge against
the diocese but has ordered an external audit of the
diocese's finances. "This is the most Byzantine
accounting system I've ever seen. I am mystified," said
Federal bankruptcy Judge Louise DeCarl Adler.
Adler
ordered the diocese to refile its financial-disclosure
statements and, this time, include
the balances in 770
bank accounts held by its 98 parishes. "Why would
anyone need 770 bank accounts?" Adler asked rhetorically. "I've
had billion-dollar corporations in this court without
this kind of accounting." The Judge also ordered
Bishop Robert Brom to personally sign "under penalty
of perjury" the new financial report.
Micheal
Webb, the diocese's attorney, called the day a victory
since "no one was held
in contempt of court."
