Australian Bishop Calls for Reform of Church

In a recently published book, Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church, Bishop Geoffrey Robinson of Sydney, Australia, says that the Catholic Church is still not serious about confronting sexual abuse, only in "managing" it. Bishop Robinson, 70, who was abused as a child, headed the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference professional standards committee for a decade until he retired in 2004.

A reporter for the Australian newspaper The Age wrote:

Calling for the most radical changes since Martin Luther started the 16th century Protestant Reformation, Bishop Robinson says the Pope has failed the church, and the church has failed its members.

Is the Sexual Abuse Crisis Over? Three Recent Court Cases Show Otherwise.

This week’s news revealed three new stories of sexual abuse of children that occurred after the Bishops wrote the Charter for the Protection of Children in Dallas in 2002.I

  • In Niagara Falls, NY, a teacher in a Catholic school carried on for two years in spite of numerous complaints. Read more.

  • A Naugatuck, CT, priest was recently charged with giving a 15 year old boy wine and money in exchange for sexual favors. Read more.

  • In Chicago, a lawsuit accuses a Jesuit priest with multiple cases of abuse from 1999 – 2003. Read more
