The American Catholic Council gathering
DETROIT (June 21, 2011) As the inaugural convention of the American Catholic Council was drawing to a close June 12, an estimated 2,000 reform-minded Catholics stood en masse to endorse a 10-point Catholic Bill of Rights and Responsibilities that asserts primacy of conscience and the right of every Catholic to have a voice in the way the church is run, as well as an obligation to advance the proclamation of the Gospel to the world and the church’s social teaching.

American Catholic Council opens in Detroit
(June 10, 2011) Some may see it as an echo of the fading church of the 1960s, others may see it as a sign of the strength of the church’s left wing. However you see it, the American Catholic Council opening this weekend in Detroit, gathering some 1,800 people from across the country, looks to be interesting.

Reflections after the American Catholic Council meeting
(June 14, 2011) I’m a veteran of conferences on church reform. I started out at the first Women’s Ordination Conference in 1975, attended the original Call to Action (the one the U.S. Bishops called in 1976) and participated in numerous Call to Action and Women’s Conferences since then. I’ve even attended a couple in Europe, including the 8th of May Movement in the Netherlands. So, the American Catholic Council meeting in Detroit this past weekend (June 10-12) was of great interest to me. I was especially interested in signs of change and maturing in the movement.

Baptism, not bishops or pope, unites the church
(June 11, 2011) “Baptism unites the church, not ordination,” theologian and author Anthony T. Padovano told more than 1,800 reform-minded Catholics gathered June 10-12 at Detroit’s Cobo Hall. “The pope does not unify or sanctify the church and make it catholic or apostolic. This is the work of the Spirit and the community.”

The other side of the Catholic tradition
(June 14, 2011) People who came of age in the past 40 years have known only one version of the Roman Catholic Church—a version of an iron-fisted ideology that first John Paul II and then Benedict XVI have enforced in the process of condemning condoms, birth control, liberation theology, creation spirituality, women, gays, the “secular world” and much more. World-over the hierarchy are being criticized for coddling pedophile priests and bishops while denouncing theologians and others who bring ideas to an age-old tradition. All these thoughts and more emerged last weekend at an event in Detroit sponsored by progressive Catholic groups networking as the “American Catholic Council.”

American Catholic Council in Detroit: They Came, They Dissented, They Disobeyed
DETROIT, MI (Catholic Online, June 14, 2011) – On Pentecost weekend, when the Church throughout the world paused to celebrate the birth of the missionary Church a dissident group calling itself Catholic while directly dissenting from the Magisterium of the Church ignored every request from the Archbishop of Detroit and proceeded with their conference. The Archdiocese offered an excellent explanation of the group, its errors and the confusion it compounds on the Archdiocesan web site.
