The Church in America is in the gravest crisis in its
history. Catholics in America have been shaken to the
core by the seemingly endless reports of priestly sexual
abuse, and by the discovery of an institutional culture
that has permitted concealment of this evil in the Church.
The crisis poses both a challenge and an opportunity
for Catholic laity, who are called to take on a new
role in the life of the Church. Faithful Catholics are
challenged to understand the crisis clearly, to hold
bishops and priests accountable for their actions, and
to ponder what we collectively must do to heal the wounds
and prepare ourselves to help build the Church anew
in the 21st century.
The Conference will feature sessions that examine how this crisis came
to be, and that challenge participants to look at the
Church and at themselves through a different lens. From
this examination, Voice of the Faithful hopes that all
participants will go forth in a spirit of healing and
hope to meet the challenges we face in building the
Church together.
